New course underway…

On Monday 9th of October, the Sea Heritage Foundation, in partnership with TAFE NSW, the Princes Trust Australia and the North Sydney City Council, commenced our second “Get into Maritime” course. We started with a smoking and welcome ceremony at the old Coal Loader Sustainability Centre in Waverton. The students then moved into the old mess hall to commence the taster course with the Prince’s Trust Australia while the dignitaries finished networking and discussions over morning tea.

What a fantastic first two days of engagement, communication, teamwork and confidence building. The Prince’s Trust team of Dean, Jen and Tayla with Indigenous Advisory Committee Member LEUT Matt Jones RAN (Retd), TAFE team Carol-Ann and Instructor Adam with MV Cape Don ships safety officer Rick worked together to create an engaging learning environment.

In the afternoon, Koori Kinnections took the cohort for an Indigenous cultural walk around the Balls Head area to tell the story of the deep Indigenous history and connection to the land.

On day two, students were welcomed to the National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour onboard the John Louis, a former pearl lugger vessel from Western Australia. For decades, before plastic became the go-to material, Indigenous divers would dive for pearls off the WA Coast from this vessel and others like her.

During the next three months, students will experience the wonder of all things maritime, with our program partners.

Welcome to our newest students and an exciting future that awaits you in the Australian maritime industry.
